Poppo's Kanteen @ Sri Petaling

I am very picky when it comes to our national dish "Nasi Lemak". Of course, there are different versions of nasi lemak out there. For me, the most important aspect of a good place of nasi lemak is the nasi (rice)! Unlike some fast food chain that introduces a nasi lemak burger which didn't work for me because there is no NASI in it fails its name.

OK, so for me a good nasi lemak have a good balance of all the flavours, the rice must be rich (fragrant from the coconut milk and pandan leaves) and grainy, sambal is a must (not too sweet but must be spicy), groundnut and ikan bilis (anchovies) must be crunchy and fresh, fresh cucumber/vege and a nice fried egg. Any side dishes is a bonus.

That brings me to this place, Poppo's Kanteen @ Sri Petaling. Their tagline "Nasi so Lemak" is very true!

I remember the first time I came to this location. My friend told me the nasi lemak here is very good. Comparable to many other famous nasi lemak places. I was sceptical at first. I ordered the Nasi Lemak Ayam Goreng. Man, I was not disappointed. When the rice was served, the whiff of the coconut milk induced rice is rich and fragrant, tears almost rolled from my eyes. The rice was rich as they promised, the sambal was balanced, and it was served with crispy ikan bilis, fried hard-boiled egg, and a keropok. The ayam goreng have a tinge of rempah (spices) to it to give it a nice kick. I was in heaven! This is my fav nasi lemak joint now!

Nasi Lemak Ayam Goreng
They do serve many other types of side dishes as well to go along with your nasi lemak. Ayam rendang, ayam kari, rendang kambing, sambal kerang (so good!) and ikan masak cili to name a few.

We managed to try other dishes as well, we decided to go for gold in ordering the roti bom with peanut butter. It is so guilty. Only in Malaysia, we can indulge in this sinful goodness.

Roti Bom Peanut Butter with Jumbo Drink
Nice crispy roti with a generous amount of peanut butter. It is so sinfully good! yumm... Of course, we have to share this as after having that plate of nasi lemak ayam.

Have yet to try their other dishes, as there are many more dishes on their menu such as noodles, fried rice, western meals, sandwiches and desserts. BUT I am a sucker for a good nasi lemak so I never ended up with anything but nasi lemak. I will try to convince my family or friends to try their other dishes and share their view here next time! haha.

For drinks, wash it down with a variety of options. I usually go for the kedondong with sea-coconut Jumbo.  Yes, they have normal size and jumbo. Jumbo you get that iron mug that we use to have back in the days as seen in the roti bom picture 😄.

It is not too pricey, for my nasi lemak it costs only RM8.90 and my jumbo drink RM6.90, roti bom RM4.50.

Ambience wise, they have airconditioned seating and outside seating. It is quite comfy. Parking may be a problem during peak hours.

Service is quite good.

They open daily from 8am - 12 midnight 😄😄😄 (anytime nasi lemak yay!)

End of the day, if you are looking for a good place for a nasi lemak, do try here!

Overall Verdict:

Food : 9/10
Service : 8/10 (its ok only)
Price : 8/10 (quite reasonable)
Ambiance : 7/10 (comfortable with aircond coffee shop)

Sunday Brunch: Annie1, Damansara Uptown

Image

Woke up late on the lazy Sunday morning. Decided to eat at Annie1, Damansara Uptown after cramping my brain on what to eat on that day. Even tweeted about it to ask what's the best place to eat. My guy picked me up from my house and drive around Uptown to look for food. We just randomly decided that any food will do, then Annie1 it is!

Image

One of the chosen dish is the Wantan Mee Soup. The texture of the noodles are very smooth and delicious too. It's not the typical boric-acid loaded plastic taste kind of noodles that I always get from the low quality noodles. Soup, the taste is very sweet and tasty too. It's not MSG loaded either. You can taste the difference. Wantan, is so-so only. Nothing special about it. Char Siew that added also contribute the tasty flavor in the noodles soup too. Worth to try it again next time if I come here again.

Price: RM5.90

I ordered Char Siew Rice for myself. The sauce is very smooth and sweet. Tasty. I love it! The Char Siew is very fatty but I'm not complaining about it. Not too dry and it's chewy too. The meat is quite tender and it's served hot as well. That's another thumb up. Unfortunately, the rice is too dry and hard if you are looking for a perfect combination. Well, meat is good, rice need more improvement. Perhaps, better water measurement next time.

Price: RM5.90

Both of us are so hungry that we decided to order this Curry Laksa Supreme. Well, that's what it says in the menu. Supreme - means it's curry added with Char Siew, Wantan & Pork Balls, etc. Why Supreme? Reason being most tables on that day have this bowl on their table. I'm curious whether this is the popular dish from Annie1 or everyone just have the cravings for curry laksa.

Image
Though my big pimple exploded I'm still not going to "pantang makan" and just go ahead with spicy food! The soup is very tasty and it's rich with the ingredients. The rest. GOOD! What more can I say. The soup itself makes me can't stop eating the whole bowl. Lick till it's clean!

Price: RM8.50

Verdict:
Food   4.5/5

Service   4/5
The system is easy. Just write down what you wanted to order on the order sheet. Then press 'CALL' on the small device on your table and the waiter will collect the order sheet from you within minutes. Straight forward way of order taking. No mistake. No delay.

Ambience    2.5/5
Nothing special. A simple design of the place. But it's clean and not that stuffy inside as it's well ventilated place.

Cong Yin Noodles, Ipoh Gardens

When I first about this noodles, I was kinda quizzed why is it called Chong Yin Fun. It literally translate as Scholar Noodles in Cantonese. But once I had it, I was amazed at how tasty it was. The minced pork with fish is particularly nice. The rest is of course the noodles, sliced pork, liver and some intestines. The soup is really tasty and its not too salty or stale. Its really flavoured well and has a nice sweetness to it. When it comes to pork noodles, the most important is the taste of the soup and this shop aces it!

The next is the freshly fried "sui kow". Usually the most important for a sui kow is the meat paste in it and with some prawns, pork and some black fungus and carrots. It is really good. The crispy skin compliments it awesomely.

The only draw back is that they cook one bowl at a time, so waiting can be quite a while. Usually I have to wait around 15-20 minutes. But we can order the sui kow first and enjoy that as it is usually ready to serve.

Make sure you get your order right before you go place your order as the lady will scold you.

But all in all its really good. A must try!

Overall Verdict:

Food : 9/10
Service : 5/10 (its ok only)
Price : 6/10 (slightly pricey for Ipoh standard)
Ambiance : 7/10 (comfortable with aircond coffee shop)

Simple Saturday Lunch at Dish Deli

Every Wednesday, we attended BNI meeting religiously from 6.45am until 8.45am. We are served with the delicious food prepared by Dish Deli. From bruschetta to the lovely taste of lasagna, we decided to try the food as it is during non-BNI day. So we chose, Saturday lunch. When we walked in, I felt awkward as the arrangement of the table is totally different. Duh! Of course it is. It's not a meeting venue anymore, silly! I still remember that there was a bridal shower lunch going on in the cafe. We thought it was closed for private function, but luckily it's not.

I ordered the Pink Guava for a drink as it was highly recommended by the owner. Without hesitation, we just proceed to order it and we find the drink is truly refreshing. Not too sweet and I did enjoyed the selection of drink that day. Unfortunately, when I wanted to order the 2nd glass, it was sold out. That showed how popular the Pink Guava is.

For me, I ordered the Roasted Lamb and meatloaf for him. While waiting for the food to arrive, few snapshots of the place are taken to show you how simple design could revive the whole ambiance into a relaxing and elegant feeling.

Let's start with the art painting that was given as a gift to the owner.

The arrangement of the tables and chairs. The lighting also simple with subtle designs.

That's the picture taken. If you are wondering, the 2 lovely ladies are the owners of Dish Deli

This place has a corner for your kids to max out while you enjoy your meal. Its different than other places as they have many quality books and toys.

For the ladies or gentlemen who wish to hang out and chill after meal, feel free to sit at the couch here for a relaxing chat with your friends.

Before you leave the cafe, do feel free to buy few take away frozen nutritious food. This is ideal for busy young professionals or young parents with tight daily schedule. All ingredients are freshly made and frozen using instant freeze. This is so that the nutrients of the food is kept and intact and not lost over time. With short period of time in heating the food, you still can enjoy fresh nutritious and really tasty food at your own comfort of your home. There have frozen food for children and also for adult. The best part is that they also have a packed version of their fabulous sauce! Love the sauce! yummy yum yumm!

Tick tock tick tock... With no long waiting time involved, our food are here!

This is my roasted lamb served with grilled carrots and potatoes. The lamb is succulent and it is indeed a great experience. Something that I haven't tasted it for quite a while. The meat is so tender and succulent and with the the gravy sauce, oh la la... SUPERB! It is something that you want to have over and over again. Unfortunately, roast meat only available during the weekends. Oh well, fair enough. I still could enjoy it on the weekends.

Price: RM31.90

He ordered meatloaf that also served with grilled carrots and mashed potatoes, that topped with tasty brown sauce. I "curi" a piece of it for a taste. The texture is very tender even if the meat is well cooked. The flavour has seeped in the meat properly. What can I say more? It's delicious. The mashed potatoes is very well mixed with butter as you can taste the milky salty taste when you grab a bite of it. Addictive I would say as I can't stop "curi"-ing his mashed potatoes too. He is not a carrot lover but now he finished all his carrots and was "curi-ing" mine!

Price: RM25.90

We ordered Bruschetta with mushroom just to satisfy my cravings! Though we had this almost every Wednesday after the meeting for breakfast, I still like to eat it even on non-BNI day. Buttery and creamy mushroom blasting in your mouth along with the nice crisp of the toast. Very well balanced flavour.

Price: forgot! Definitely less than RM15.00 Sorry.... :(

If you are looking for a great meal with a reasonable price, this is a great place to be. But please come early as this place tends to fill up really fast. There are many more dishes that we havent tried but I am sure we will be coming here even more often soon! Parking may be a problem but if you plan to park at the basement carpark then it wouldn't be a problem.

Overall Verdict:

Service : 10/10 (owner serve us wor...)

Valentine Meal that I love to share....

Valentine's Day is a day that every couple looking forward to. Men might need to crack their heads to decide what to do on that special day. Ladies are anxiously waiting what's coming to them on that special day. Perhaps this year going to do a different taste with different style. Candlelight dinner maybe kinda old school to the new generation. Perhaps fusion concept that mixed the East and West might attract the young couple. Women would love to try something new as it would excite them. Do you agree?

Who would have though appetizer can be a Japanese fusion with a bit of Oriental taste? Not to forget, you could add a little bit different spice with the YuZu Orange Wasabe Mayo. These ingredients would triggered your taste bud and ready for the main course.

Double boiled soup chicken style chicken broth! That's the double chicken taste in there served with the taste of the Kumomoto Oyster and Lychee jam. Looks good and it may sound weird, but I like the slight sweetness in the oyster. Oyster was fresh and it doesn't smell that bad. When you tasted it, you know it's a quality selected oyster. For those who scared to eat a raw food, I think it's not that bad for you to try for the 1st time.

The main course I tried the Beef Medaglione al Forno topped with Mushroom Ragout. It added with the Berries Balsamice and Raisin Bordelaise Sauce. That is a very long name. The beef was prepared in medium. Of course, if you would prefer a well done steak, it's perfectly fine. I prefer it cooked medium though.

Dessert will the last of course and I'm lucky to try the chocolate cheese mousse and strawberry dipped served with caramelized Granny Smith Apple. Another long name to remember. Basically, just one word to describe this. That is "SWEET".  But again, no matter how sweet it is, I can't finished it. Too much for me to digest in the end. Not to worry, you could always share the abundant sweetness with your loved one. In fact, a valentine meal should ended with loads of sweetness, don't you think so?

I would like to thank Advertlets & Holiday Villa, Hotel & Suites Subang for the invitation. Holiday Villa is a premier 5-star business resort and club that offers ideal gateway for business and leisure. Valentine's Day is over though but fret not!  You could always come and enjoy what they have to offer you for a short gateway from hectic city life. It's strategically located just 25km from the heart of Kuala Lumpur.

Geláre Ice Cream with waffles and pancakes w/ Advertlets

Have a sweet tooth? or just craving for some really good ice creams? and best of all on top of your favourite waffles? Imagine the warm crunchy waffles topped with flavourful ice creams! yummmmo! Thinking about it makes me drool all over again! But hey! I did manage to try it! At Geláre in e-Curve! or formerly known as Cineleisure.

Basically their main attraction are their Ice Cream and to top it off is to share with a nice warm waffles. I was wondering what Geláre meant and to find out that it actually means "to freeze" or "congeal" in Italiano! mi scusi, mi scusi! in Italian I mean. All this good food brings out the Italian in me!

Their ice creams are a marriage between Italian and American. yea like Micheal Corleone! Capisce? They took the Italian ice cream and mixing it with American style Ice Cream which is creamier.

I manage to try out several dishes when I went there.

First was of course their waffles and their Ice Creams! This I tried the Pistachio and Strawberry. Their Pistachios ice cream was a wonderful treat! blasting with a balanced pistachio aroma and with chunky pistachio in it. The strawberry ice cream was not overly sweet.

Next was Chocolate Overload, yes Chocolate Overload and Mocha Chip ice cream and waffle. The chocolate overload is a must try for chocolate lovers!

I have to say the waffles itself is a treat! Crunchy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. Yummmo!

If you are a waffle person then you will surely want to try out their pancakes!

This is pancakes with strawberries and cream. The texture of the pancakes are done well. Nice, fluffy and hot! It might be abit sweet for some but to most, it will definitely put a smile on your face!

This is another one I tried, banana pancake

And of course the normal but equally satisfying pancakes with syrup and cream.

Besides all this they also serve other varieties of food such as sandwiches, muffins and cakes.

You can even visit them at www.gelare.com

It is located at the ground floor at e-Curve (formerly CineLeisure) next to Tony Romas.

Service: 8/10 (good but since its new, i shall give it some time to improve)
Food Quality: 9/10 (very good ice creams and very good waffles)
Environment/ambience: 9/10 (love the mural and the colour concept)
Price: 8/10 (reasonable for such quality food - RM 30++ for ice cream with waffles)

My verdict: a good place to treat yourself with some really nice ice cream and fantastic waffles!
